Moving House is stressful. Add in children, and the task becomes a whole lot harder. Children of all ages will be affected by such a drastic change to their routine, but there are some simple steps you can take to make the transition easier. The most important thing you can do to make moving easier on your children is to plan ahead. Even if you have to move at short notice, start planning as soon as you can.

Tell Your Children about the Move

Moving house often means a new school and new friends, as well as a new home environment to get used to. Therefore, it’s important to tell your children as soon as possible so they have time to get used to the idea.

Get The Kids Involved

Depending on your situation, it might be possible to get your kids involved in choosing a new home to move into. If this is a decision that has already been made, you could let them choose their rooms (within reason!). Other ways to get the kids involved include helping pack boxes, and choosing items to give away to charity or sell at a moving sale.

Talk about Moving to Your Children

It’s important to have regular conversations with your children about what moving involves. Talk about the area you are moving to — take a drive or walk around if this is practical. It’s also a good idea to discuss new schools, new shops and parks. Surprises can sometimes be upsetting for children so giving them as much information as possible will reduce their (and your!) stress levels. Moving in the school holidays is ideal as it will give your children time to get used to their new home before starting a new school.
